IPL Permanent Hair Reduction
Before beginning a series of IPL Permanent Hair Reduction treatments there are a few things that everybody should know.
We’ve listed the top 10 things you need to know before having IPL, so that you can be prepared for your treatments and be rewarded with those silky-smooth results!
- How it works
While we’d love to claim that it’s magic, the reality is IPL is science! Simply put, it works like this: Light is attracted to pigment. The IPL light is non-intelligent and can’t differentiate between hair and skin, it is simply attracted to the darkest thing it finds, and on you we want that to be your hair, not your skin, hence why IPL works best on clients with dark hair and light skin. IPL may be based on simple science, but delivering safe and effective results comes from choosing a therapist who is not only qualified but also experienced, and that their equipment is TGA approved.
- Avoid sun exposure
We cannot treat you if you have had sun exposure within two weeks of your IPL treatment as IPL will sizzle any pigment on your skin. This means that if you are sunburned, or even just tanned, you may need to reschedule your appointment. If you’re a bit of a beach goer, you may wish to start your treatments during the winter months to avoid any inconvenience.
- A fake tan’s a safe tan (unless you’re getting IPL!)
The same as with a real tan, we can’t treat you if you have a fake tan either. So it’s time to embrace your inner Nicole Kidman and rock the pale look on the day of your appointment. Tip: bicarbonate soda powder mixed with a little water and used as an exfoliant is a great trick to assist in the removal of any fake tan. Remember, any residue of fake tan left on the treatment area will affect your results and potentially cause you to have to reschedule, so NO tan for at least 2 weeks prior to your treatment.
- Shave, don’t wax!
The root of the hair must be present in the follicle for the IPL to identify it, so avoid waxing, epilating, plucking, use of depilatory creams or anything that might disturb the hair follicle. Instead, shave the treatment area 12-14 hours before your appointment. A clean shave with a fresh sharp razor is a must; we don’t want the IPL targeting longer hairs that sit above the skin, as this runs the risk of causing burns.
- Skip the moisturiser
When it comes to the day of your treatment you need to make sure you are going au-natural on your body. Make sure your skin is clean and totally product free, don’t even moisturise or apply deodorant. This goes for 24 hours after your appointment, too (except for recommended products of course)!
- Be honest at your consultation
IPL Permanent Hair Reduction is a cosmetic treatment and as such you need to feel that you’re in safe hands (FYI, our hands are exceptionally safe). At Smooth Synergy Cosmedic Clinic your IPL treatments will always, and only, be performed by the owner, Carla Hutchinson, who is a Cosmetic Dermal Therapist with over 13 years experience in IPL treatments (isn’t it nice to know that you won’t get someone new every time you attend your treatment!). Before you begin any treatment, you will receive a complimentary consultation with Carla where she will assess your skin and hair type, discuss treatment options and expected results. This is when you’ll need to disclose any previous treatments or medication that you’ve been taking. Things like a recent facial or Roaccutane will have an impact on the suitability of IPL for you.
- Have realistic expectations
It takes more than one session to see phenomenal results. Once you complete your treatment plan, you should expect long-term hair reduction! It is also important to keep in mind that no IPL or Laser clinic can claim 100% hair removal, as some hair will always strive to grow back. Re-growth can be affected by hormones and other biological factors which can vary from person to person. Our obligation free consultation will help determine your long term result.
- Be consistent
For best results, make sure you attend your appointments religiously every four to six weeks (or at intervals advised by your therapist). The timing of your treatments dramatically influences the outcome due to hair growth patterns, thus we suggest you book a course of IPL treatments rather than sporadic appointments (we tailor package deals to suit your needs and budget too).
- Use the recommended products
Treated areas may appear “sunburnt” after treatment; a calming skin care product, such as ASAP Soothing Gel and a cold compress will ease any discomfort and swelling. Avoid applying oil-based makeup to the area in the unlikely event of a reaction and stay out of the sun, using UVA/UVB SPF50+ (we will always apply this for you before you leave the Clinic) on the treated area to prevent discoloration or sunburn. Remember your skin will be sensitive to the sun for 48 hours after treatment.
- Avoid exercise and hot showers
Exercising and hot showers both increase your body temperature, causing your body to sweat and creating a potential breeding ground for bacteria. This could lead to infection or ingrown hairs, so we recommend waiting at least 24 hours after an IPL treatment before attempting any activity that may increase your body temperature and upset the hair follicles.
Now that you have a basic understanding on how IPL works, and what to do before and after your treatment, you are ready to go forth and book your free consultation at Smooth Synergy Cosmedic Clinic in Bunbury, Esperance and Harvey! Hoorah!
